Apple iPad Air and iPad Pro may feature new landscape FaceTime cameras

Apple's iPad lineup is due for an upgrade, and there are plenty of rumors surrounding them. The OLED iPad Pro is rumored to be a redesigned iPad Air. A new rumor from seasoned Weibo tipster Instant Digital (via MacRumors ) now suggests that the upcoming iPad Air and iPad Pro will feature a landscape front-facing camera.Currently both the Air and Pro iPads have front-facing cameras on the top of the device. This creates an off-center view for users during landscape FaceTime calls.

Apple took steps to address this problem somewhat with the 10th-generation iPad. Since then, however, Apple hasn't released any new iPads, but it looks like the company could extend this improvement to additional models. The leaked code within iOS 17.4 hints at a landscape camera orientation for the upcoming iPad Pro. And the leaker now suggests that the redesigned iPad Air, which is rumored to be available in both 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch sizes, will also adopt this camera placement.

The logistics of this transfer remain unclear.

The current Apple Pencil attaches magnetically to the side of the iPad Pro and iPad Air for charging, which could potentially conflict with the side-mounted camera. However, there are also rumors of a new Apple Pencil release alongside the updated iPads. So Apple could find a design solution. The redesigned iPad Air and new OLED iPad Pro models are expected to launch soon, possibly within months. These updates, if accurate, would indicate a larger design change in Apple's tablet lineup with a focus on improved usability.
